His wife called police from a neighbour’s house at 6.40am, saying she had left their home after being assaulted by her husband.

A police spokeswoman said she was obviously very shaken, but with no visible injuries, she was led away and is currently staying with relatives and is being supported by police family liaison officers.

On the arrival of police, the man was seen with a shotgun on the garage roof of the family house. The house was swiftly contained and the immediate area cordoned off to make sure there was no danger to members of the public. At 7.25am three shots were heard.

Police firearms had not been discharged. Specialist firearms officers were making their way to the town when the shots were heard. After the police helicopter was able to confirm that the man no longer posed a threat, officers went onto the garage roof and found the man with what appears to be serious gun shot wounds.

DCI Nick May, who is heading the investigation, said: “We are fully investigating the tragic death of this man and our condolences go to his family. We are not seeking anyone else in connection with his death.”

The man was a registered firearms licence holder.

A post mortem will take place in due course.

Horsham Road has been closed for some hours and Sussex Police would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding.
