Update: Mineral oil on beaches dangerous to small children

ADUR and Worthing Councils have confirmed the white substance found across the Sussex shoreline is a mineral oil dangerous to small children and animals.

Andy Edwards, Head of Environment, arranged for the substance to be tested and a clean-up operation is still in progress.

It is not hazardous unless digested, but the public are being warned to keep small children and pet dogs away from the coastline and not to touch solidified particles on the beach.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have been informed, and the clean up process will continue on Monday (February 1), as high tides and strong winds are unsafe for staff today.

In an official statement posted on YouTube, Andy said: “We would like to thank the lady who first reported into us. It gives us the information we need to make the right decisions.”

People are encouraged to report further incidents to the council on 01903 239999 or to the Environment Agency via their 24 hour hotline on 0800 807060.
