He smashed a glass panel on the front door and entered the store before making off with around £300 from a large glass goldfish bowl used to collect donations.

Officers said the man escaped through the back door of the building after being disturbed by police.

The suspect is described as male, about 5’ 8”, of small build, wearing a grey hooded top, black trousers and black trainers. His hood was up over a cap.

Traders and volunteers along East Street were left disgusted by the break-in.

A volunteer at the Cancer Research UK store said: “It is shocking. £300 could be a days care for a cancer patient.”

Kay Tyler, who owns Mayfair Hair next door to the charity shop, said: “I just think it is really sad people have to take to that just to steal money. It is the lowest of the low.”

Her colleague Jo Edwards added: “I think it’s disgraceful. It is disgusting, stealing from a charity shop.”
