UPDATE: Police remove WWII weapon found in Hastings house

Police have removed a World War Two weapon found in a Hastings house this afternoon (Saturday, January 16).

Officers were called to a property in Robertson Terrace at around 4:30pm after the discovery of what was thought to be a small piece of ordnance from World War Two.

After liaising with residents and Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts, the item was identified as a WWII mortar.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “The item was established as a World War Two mortar. It was a spent mortar and therefore did not pose a risk to anybody.”

A mortar is a weapon that fires explosive projectiles known as mortar bombs.

The item has been removed from the property and will be disposed of by police.
