A crew from Southern Water was drilling into Chatsworth Road this morning to carry out the work when they hit an underground electricity cable and caused the power cut.

It has effected six buildings directly, including Cannon House, where the Worthing Herald is based, and Worthing Police Station, and a further 12 due to repair works on the power cable.

Staff at the Herald heard a loud popping noise when the power went out on the first floor of the building, and the drilling stopped.

A statement from Southern Water said: “While carrying out vital maintenance work in Chatsworth Road, Worthing, our crew disturbed a power cable.

“We are working with colleagues at EDF to resolve this issue as quickly as possible, and their repair crew was on site at around 2pm.

“The work will be a two-stage process, but we have no estimated repair time at the moment.

“We apologise to all those affected for any inconvenience caused.”

Technicians from UK Power Networks checked the buildings affected and turned off the power to them at 2.45pm while the repair works are being carried out.

The traffic lights on High Street, at the end of Chatsworth Road, are currently off, and the multi-storey car park on the same road has no power. Officials have been seen at the exits to prevent customers leaving without paying.

A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said: “UK Power Networks engineers are working to restore power supplies to customers in the Chatsworth Road area of Worthing after a third party damaged one of our underground electricity cables.

“The incident initially resulted in six customers losing power at 10.30am today and our engineers isolated supplies to a further 12 customers at 2.45pm in order to safely carry out repairs.

“Engineers are working to restore all power supplies as swiftly as safely possible.”
