UPDATE: Priory Meadow reopens after no fire found

Priory Meadow Shopping Centre in Hastings has reopened after firefighters found no fire this afternoon (Tuesday, February 23).

The mall was evacuated and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to reports of smoke issuing from a lift motor room at around 2.55pm.

Crews investigated a smell of electrical burning in the area.

No fire was found, crews isolated electrics for safety and left the scene in the hands of the building owners.

Firefighters left the scene at about 3.40pm.

Hundreds of shoppers were left stranded by the evacuation with many left wondering what was going on.

@ju5tsarah on twitter said: “@Priory_Meadow any chance we can get the money back from the time wasted spent waiting to get back in the car park?”

And Layla Watts-Steele wrote on Facebook: “Oh my god I got in the lift yesterday and it smelt like something was burning.”
