West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 8.36pm and mobilised two fire engines to the scene.
At 9.30pm a fire service spokesman said the problem seemed to be coming from one of the plant rooms in the hospital.
He said officers were working with engineers to solve the problem, and there was not any risk to anyone in the wards.
