UPDATE: Road re-opened after lorry crashes into level crossing

A road has been re-opened after a lorry crashed into the barriers at a level crossing this morning (Monday January 11).

Officers from Sussex Police and British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the level crossing in Station Road, Billingshurst, at around 8.45am.

A spokesman for BTP said considerable damage was caused to barriers. No-one was injured and no arrests have been made.

Network Rail, who are responsible for level crossings across the country, said the line had been re-opened but the barriers remained closed for a few hours.

Southern Rail added delays of up to 20 minutes were experienced on the line between Horsham and Bognor Regis until 12.30pm. The service is now running to schedule.

Station Road was blocked in both directions whilst engineers fixed the barriers. They were repaired at around 11am and the road has been re-opened.

The crash is the second to occur at the village’s level crossing in the past month.

A lorry crashed into the barriers back on December 7 and caused delays of up to 45 minutes to rail services.

A spokesman for Network Rail said no review of the crossing would be made until the company knew the ‘full circumstances’ of this morning’s incident.
