The woman driving the horse box received slight injuries not requiring hospital treatment and her female passenger was badly shaken but unhurt.

The horse box and towing car left the road and went into an adjacent field and horses were trapped for a time but were released and are understood to be unhurt.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call us on 101 quoting Operation Tarrant, or email us at ‘[email protected]’.

“The A265 has been closed in both directions and drivers are advised to avoid the Burwash Common area if possible.

“We thank drivers for their patience at this time while the scene is cleared and the cause is investigated.”
