Upper Beeding walk raises money for Chestnut Tree House hospice

MORE than 300 people of all ages united to raise money for two good causes.

People from parishes and schools across West Sussex gathered at The Towers Convent School, in Upper Beeding, to take part in a sponsored walk.

The event, which began with a mass by Bishop Kieran Conry and Father Terry Martin, was to raise money for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and CAFOD – The Catholic Overseas Development Agency.

“The walk was approximately 10 miles long and gave the youth of the diocese an opportunity to meet each other and have a ‘heart to heart’ as they walked along,” said Carole Baker, head teacher at The Towers.

The walk was led by youth adviser Ray Mooney and Michelle Pope, one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award leaders at The Towers.

At the rear of the walk were two of the sisters from The Towers Convent – Sister Mary Andrew and Sister Patrick.

“Sister Patrick alone hopes to have raised £800 and, together with all of the other sponsor money, we hope the two charities will benefit enormously from the efforts of these young people,” said Mrs Baker.
