MARKET Street in Lewes will be closed this weekend due to urgent gas work.
Southern Gas Networks is due to start essential engineering work there at 12noon tomorrow (Saturday). The project is due to be completed at approximately 8pm on Sunday.
Access will be maintained for residents and emergency vehicles. This work is required in order to restore gas supplies to properties that have been without service for several weeks.
A night time closure was considered, but would be impractical due to the need to access the properties at some point during the work plus there were also concerns about noise disturbance raised during previous overnight works near this location.
It will be necessary to close Market Street between the junctions of Market Lane and West Street. A signed diversion route will be in place via High Street/Fisher Street for eastbound traffic. Westbound traffic will be diverted via High Street/Neville Road/Offham Road, this of course includes HGVs and other large vehicles. Market Lane will be accessible in the usual manner, from Market Street.
An SGN spokesman said: “We know roadworks can be frustrating but it is sometimes necessary for utility companies to dig up the roads to access pipes and wires.
“We always try to schedule this type of work so it causes as little disruption as possible and we have worked hard to find the best possible time for this closure. To close Market Street during the working week would cause disruption in the town, but the work does need to be done urgently as some customers have been without a gas supply for several weeks.”
