Van and four cars in dual-carriageway smash

LUCKY motorists escaped unhurt when five vehicles collided on the A27 in a pileup just before rush-hour yesterday.

The accident happened at the Lancing College traffic lights at the junction of the Shoreham-bypass and Coombes Road.

Four cars and a van collided, but fortunately no one was seriously injured.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue attended the scene with one fire engine when the call came in at 3.05pm.

The crew from Shoreham had made the scene safe by 3.41pm.

Nobody was trapped inside any of the vehicles but considerable damage was done.

A black Vauxhall Corsa, a silver Toyota Prius, a black Honda Civic, a dark blue Peugeot, and a silver Ford Transit were all involved in the crash.

Moments later, motorists’ misery was confounded when a lorry broke down at Lancing causing further tailbacks.
