Van skids off road in Bexhill's Old Town

RUSH HOUR traffic was bought to a standstill at approximately 4pm Friday evening when a white Vauxhall van skidded and crashed into the traffic island on the corner of the High Street and De La Warr Road in Bexhill's Old Town, leaving it's driver and her nine year old daughter badly shaken.

It's alleged that this was just one of a number of cars which had skidded that afternoon due to what is believed to be a large diesel spillage on the road.

Driver of the van, Bexhill resident Eve McDougall, 47 said that she felt the car, "literally slide off the road", as she approached the bend. One wheel came off the car and another tyre burst.

She added: "It was so scary but could have been a lot worse, me and my daughter could have been killed if the cars behind had hit us."

Eve said a number of cars following her had also skidded.

A Police spokesman said: "The accident was due to oil/diesel spillage on the road. We have no idea where the spillage came from but it was subsequently cleared up and the roads were re-opened at 5.10pm"
