Vandals 'desecrate' church

VANDALS set off fire extinguishers and damaged a bible in a church.

Intruders broke into St Thomas a Becket Church in Cliffe High Street, Lewes.

A large bible, an English Hymnal book and a flag were thrown across the church.

The Rev George Linnegar told the Express: 'Fire extinguishers were let off and some books were destroyed.

'It's not much in some people's eyes but it amounts to desecration of the church.

'It's very difficult to do anything about it because we are intent on keeping the church open and there's not someone there all the time, nor

can there be.'

Rev Linnegar said another break-in took place a month ago and police have said the incident is part of an ongoing series of anti-social behaviour in the area.
