Vantastic adventure

THE hilarious tale of a Lancing couple who travelled around Europe in a VW camper van is the subject of a new book.

Two Clots in a Camper by Steve Coppard tells the story of how he and his wife, Linda, from West Way, went around

Europe in a van called Pooh in 1994.

They decided to make the journey after Linda had been made redundant from her job at the Alliance and Leicester in Hove.

"The trip was so bumbling," Steve told the Lancing Herald. "I think part of the reason why people like the book is because it's achievable escapism.

"Everyone can dream of buying a home abroad, but not everyone can afford to, but anyone could afford to buy a beaten-up van and have a few months abroad."

Steve said it took him about a year to write the book and added: "The way it started was I have an auntie and uncle in Wales and I was used to writing them these monologue letters.

"They said my style of writing was so good, it was like me being in the armchair alongside them, and they said why didn't I write a book."

The Coppards planned to spend three months travelling down the French Atlantic coast, to the northern coast of Spain, on to Porto and Lisbon in Portugal, and then back into Spain.

But they returned after nine weeks after a series of mishaps and a lack of cash.

They made another trip in 2000, but this time they took a slightly better van as transport.

The book has been published by Publish America and is now available online from www.amazon.co.uk
