Varied programme enjoyed at Lewes

Lucinda Houghton, Sara Gourlay and Suzy Ruffles song recital, Westgate Chapel, Lewes.

The damp autumn evening outside was forgotten inside the Westgate Chapel in Lewes. With repertoire from Purcell to Delibes, Handel to Dring, a near capacity audience enjoyed this wonderfully-varied song programme in a concert given to raise funds for the Admiral Nurses of Dementia UK. A charity registered some 18 years ago with specialised nurses, training and direct telephone support to carers, it is hoped that local awareness will lead to the introduction of Admiral Nurses into Sussex.

The textures of the two voices are so different: Lucinda’s ringing clarity and seemingly effortless range was as captivating as ever; Sara’s expressive and warm mezzo tones glowed through her solos, and yet blended so well in duet. Beautifully accompanied by Suzy on piano, the whole presentation was quite lovely. The event raised £500 for Dementia UK
