VE Day wth boiled beef and carrots

BOILED beef and carrots - maybe not considered party food these days but 60 years ago it would have been a slice of pure heaven for millions of Britons celebrating VE Day.

From a menu which included vegetable broth and sponge pudding, this authentic war-time dish was served to residents of Grosvenor Park who enjoyed their street party in the most civilised way given the blustery weather of the weekend - indoors.

Staff entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing in the costume of the time and leading the singalong - popular tunes of the day such as Run Rabbit Run, Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major, and, of course, We'll Meet Again.

The original Winston Churchill VE speech was played to remind everyone what the British people heard on the day; residents each received a copy of the historic newspaper heralding victory celebrations.
