Veterans come together to remember the fallen

VETERANS from Littlehampton came together to honour their comrades at a special National Veterans Day service last Wednesday.

Held at Littlehampton's War Memorial at the top of Caffyns Field, the ceremony was organised by the Littlehampton branches of the Royal Naval Association (RNA) and Royal Air Force Association (RAFA).

It was the second national annual day of remembrance for all veterans following the inaugural event last year.

Littlehampton mayor Dr James Walsh and Arun chairman Graham Tyler were among those who laid wreaths at the memorial and the standards of several associations and veterans' groups were flown.

After the ceremony, those who had gathered retired to the mayor's parlour at Littlehampton Town Council's Manor House offices for drinks and a further chance to reminisce and remember those who have fallen.

Then, later that evening, a Veterans Musical Evening was held at the Maltravers Social Club, formerly the United Services Club, in Maltravers Road.

Keyboardist Geoff Hedger and members of the Edwin James Festival Choir provided the musical entertainment and a buffet and bar kept the revellers fuelled for much singing and dancing.

Bill Kelsey, chairman of Littlehampton's RAFA branch, explained why celebrating the day is so important: "The idea is to help remind the community that there are people living alongside them who are veterans of service with the armed forces.

"It's nice to know that the younger generations are aware that many of the older members of the community have served on behalf of the nation and to the best of their ability."

Bill started his Air Force career when he joined the Littlehampton Air Training Corps when it formed in 1941. By 1943 he had joined the RAF where he served as a wireless operator and gunner and later as a radio telephonist, ending his service at RAF Tangmere.

Tom Harrison, chairman of the Littlehampton branch of the RNA, joined the Navy in 1950, serving as a petty officer steward organising catering on various classes of ship all over the world for 22 years.

He said: "It was a fitting day of remembrance and the party in the evening was great fun for all who were there.

"We hope that next year's celebrations will be even bigger and better."
