This remarkable run around the UK will see a baton passed from hand to hand in short stages over the course of 50 days. It will culminate at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Manchester, where the Queen will open the baton and read the message it contains.

Vicky, who attends Roedean School, was nominated by Sport England because she is an international academy hockey player. She is captain of the Sussex Under 16s team, and for the last two years she has been in the last 32 candidates for the England national team.

The Shoreham-by-Sea leg is on day 17 of the run, and Vicky's stage, approximately half a kilometre in length, will take her between two and three minutes to run.

In a letter confirming Vicky's selection for the team, a spokesman for the Commonwealth Games said: 'You have been chosen as a representative of your community as someone that embodies community values, spirit and national pride.'
