A major celebratory event to mark the success of Eastbourne’s 100x3 work experience initiative was held at The View Hotel yesterday (January 29).
It was set up by the MP, Stephen Lloyd, in partnership with the local Jobcentre Plus and other partners. Its objective was to move local residents from long-term unemployment to jobs via, initially, work placements.
Mr Lloyd said, “It’s incredibly difficult when you’ve been unemployed for some time to get back into work. Following on from the tremendous success of my original 100 apprenticeships in 100 days project soon after the general election, I knew that Eastbourne’s key strength was its ability to work together as a community.
“Consequently, I wanted to do this in the really difficult area of long term unemployment as I was convinced it would work and the result has completely bowled me over.
“So far, 37 employers have signed up to the 100 x 3 initiative, with 187 placements filled and 60 of those finding work either with the employer or elsewhere. That’s 31% of those involved finding employment! When you bear in mind the government’s average is only 4.2% you’ll get the reason why all of us involved are so proud of what the town has achieved. I really am profoundly grateful to everyone who has taken part - both as employers and customers - which is why we will be having a big event celebrating their efforts.”
Matt Huddart, general of The View Hotel, said, “I was pleased to take part in this superb initiative and in fact the person we took on as part of 100x3 is now working permanently at the hotel. I had a hunch that both the business involved and the individuals who undertook work placements would benefit and this has certainly proven to be true in our case.”
