They were released on police bail and must report back to officers on June 20.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was treated in the intensive care unit at Worthing Hospital.

His condition has now been described as stable.

Officers cordoned off around 50 metres between the Waterstone's bookshop and McDonalds fast-food restaurant at around 6am when forensic investigators began examining the crime scene.

Busy weekend crowds gathered and looked on as officers dusted shop windows for fingerprints and examined bloodstains on the pavement.
