VIDEO: Auction of Sir Patrick Moore’s personal belongings in Chichester

He was one of the most respected astronomers of his time and a national treasure. And now fans of Sir Patrick Moore can buy a piece of his legacy.

Today (October 8), Henry Adams Auctions in Chichester is offering for sale the contents of ‘Farthings’, the Selsey home of Sir Patrick.

The auction will take place in the auction house in Baffins Lane from around 11.30am.

There are around 150 lots with a number of personal items including Sir Patrick’s magnifying glasses, typewriter, office chair and orreries.

Buyers can even purchase one of his eclectic Hawaiian shirts.

A well respected member of the scientific community, Sir Patrick was popular among his peers and also up for sale are a number of books signed by leading scientists including astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle and Carl Sagan.

“Sir Patrick was very well travelled and everywhere he went, he collected shot glasses – we have over 100 on sale,” said auctioneer and valuer Andrew Swain.

“A lot of people held him in great affection, reverence and respect.”

And the sale has generated global interest.

“There are a lot of people who would love to have something he owned.

“We have had people phoning from Canada.”

The auction house has also created limited edition boxes with a selection of Sir Patrick’s belongings including letter openers, shot glasses and a shirt.
