VIDEO: Bloom of jellyfish spotted near Sussex coast

Hundreds of jellyfish were spotted just a couple of miles from the Littlehampton coastline

Pictures taken by Karl Dimmock, managing director at Johnston Press South, while on his boat yesterday evening, show some of the larger jellyfish around a couple of miles south of Littlehampton.

Mr Dimmock said: “It was amazing and lovely to see. The whole time they were constantly circling us. There were loads of them, from very small ones up to ones that were quite large. It seemed fairly unusual from what I have read online.”

Mr Dimmock believes the jellyfish were of the barrel variety – otherwise known as the dustbin-lid jellyfish and the largest found in British waters.

They ranged in size from 60cm wide and 1.5metres in length to as small as a can of coke, according to Mr Dimmock.

The Herald&Gazette has contacted a local biologist for comment.
