The smash happened along the northbound stretch of the A280 Angmering bypass at 10.10am.

It is believed the driver of the Land Rover Defender lost control by the junction of the bypass and Water Lane, which caused him to flip and roll his vehicle several times, Worthing district commander Roy Barraclough said.

It eventually came to rest on its roof.

Roy Barraclough said: “The Land Rover rolled over about three times. The guy was lucky to get out of it.

“This is testimony to the strength of the Land Rover that he got out of it.

“Often when we see vehicles that have been through a similar incident the occupants can suffer serious injuries because of the mechanics involved in being in a car that turns over. So yes, he was very lucky.”

Fire crews from Worthing and Littlehampton attended the scene and stabilised the damaged vehicle before freeing its trapped driver.

The man was taken to hospital and the incident was left with police.
