There was a party atmosphere as the huge procession would its way through the streets led by Jack, a dancing tower of leaves, and his green bogie attendants. They were followed by a host of colourful characters in stunning costumes, Morris dancers, musicians, chimney sweeps and drummers. Special guests this year were La Lachera carnival from Rocca Grimaldi, Italy, who are famous for their masks.

Jack was released from the Fisherman’s Museum at 10.15am and the procession made its way up All Saints Street and down the High Street, pausing for dancing displays, before continuing up Croft Road, to the West Hill.

After an afternoon of dancing and celebrations on the hill, the Jack was slain to release the spirit of summer and leaves were handed out to the crowd to bring them good luck.

Hastings Jack in the Green founder and Chief Bogeyman Keith Leech said: “It was an excellent and trouble-free event this year and the crowds along the route and on the hill were incredible, despite the weather.

“It was amazing that the sun shone right at the moment we released the spirit of summer.”
