Representatives from the town’s Royal British Legion Branch, chairman of Horsham District Council Brian O’Connell and Sussex Police Horsham district commander Howard Hodges were among those paying their respects on behalf of the wider public.

They were joined by 210 pupils from St Mary’s CofE Primary School who placed small poppy cross next to the war memorial after the two minutes’ silence.

The event followed a successful Remembrance Sunday parade, which drew the biggest crowds yet.

Mr O’Connell said: “It was great to see all the people out toe make the effort to remember those fallen in wars.

“I think it’s fitting today that we have 210 children from St Mary’s School because this clearly shows what those people who suffered through the world wars gave their lives for: so that those children can live in freedom and have the lifestyle we enjoy today.”
