VIDEO: Hundreds gather as scouts help Horsham celebrate St George’s Day

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Guides from across the district pulled on their woggles, tucked in their shirts and popped on their smart uniforms as they marched through the town centre on Sunday, April 26, to mark the day of their Patron Saint.

The youngsters were also joined by the older Explorer Scouts as well as leaders and volunteers.

Led by the Royal British Legion Band the troops started their annual march near the station and walked through the town waving their flags high as they paraded down North Street.

The youngsters then reconvened in the Carfax where hundreds of people gathered around the Bandstand to listen to prayers and stories presented by the 1st Cowfold Scout Group.

Songs were also sung and most importantly the young members and leaders were given a chance to renew their Scout Promises and acknowledge the Scout Law.

There were a few closing thoughts from Father Keith Littlejohn, parish priest at St Peter’s Church in Cowfold, before the assembly of the different troops flags, followed by the national anthem.

The afternoon was officially brought to a close by the Horsham District Commissioner and a collection was held for charities Macmillan Sussex Project and Marfan Trust.

The parade is one of the biggest events in the Scouting calendar and marks the anniversary of St George’s Day which is celebrated every year on April 23.

St George was appointed the Patron Saint of the Scouts by founder Baden Powell due to his faith, courage and perseverance and ever since the organisation has marked the occasion with a public parade and in some cases a local church service.

Not only does it give youngsters a chance to learn more about their Patron Saint but it also gives them the opportunity to meet young members from other troops as well as remind themselves of their Scout Promises and the Scout Law.

Peter Scofield, district commissioner for Horsham Scouts said: “Looking out on a sea of smiling faces is all you need to confirm that Scouting is alive and well in Horsham. Thank you to all who came and helped.”
