Mrs Pyper, who served in the RAF between 1976 and 1987 as a fighter controller, said this year’s show had been ‘bigger and better than ever before’.

“The organisers have done a fantastic job,” she said.

“The weather is great and they have managed to attract some really good display aircraft.”

Mrs Pyper, who was adjutant to the BBMF while in the RAF, said she was most looking forward to seeing the Lancaster bomber.

Group Captain Stringer said the event had been ‘brilliant’, especially the variety of the displays.

“There’s a bit of everything,” he said.

“It’s a great crowd and everybody’s obviously appreciative of what they are seeing.

When asked about the missing Canadian Lancaster bomber, Group Captain Stringer said: “These things happen.

“The most important thing is that we do our level best to get her flying again as soon as we possibly can, which I’m sure will be soon.”
