Dr Tim Kimber, partner at The Park Surgery, said it will take pressure of existing A&E departments at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester and Worthing Hospital.

“We send hardly anybody over to A&E in Worthing. We see and treat almost all patients that come in to see us.

“As the service takes off, it will be convenient for patients and will stop the Worthing and Chichester sites getting clogged up. These A&E departments should be for more serious conditions.”

He added that the clinical commissioning group which oversees local healthcare will also make a saving, as the cost of the minor injuries contract at The Park Surgery will cost less than sending patients to A&E.

The surgery has been running a minor injuries service for several years, and won a contract from the Department of Health to upgrade it.

The new building will also house admin space, a conference room, a GP’s office and a room where blood samples can be taken.

The Park Surgery is taking on 2,000 patients as a result of the closure of the Arun Medical Group surgery in East Street, Littlehampton.
