“Minutes later, witnesses reported seeing a pony – believed to be the same animal – travelling on the A2011 Crawley Avenue towards Hazelwick Roundabout.

Police received further reports of the pony on Gatwick Road, Manor Royal, London Road and Langley Drive, and it was contained behind the Crowne Plaza, before making off again.

“It was eventually contained using ropes in the garden of a property in Short Close at 2.46pm.

“Police would like to thank everyone involved for their help in locating and securing the horse, which was taken to a nearby yard. The RSPCA has been contacted in a bid to trace the owner.”
