Pupils at The Globe Primary School in Lancing were tasked with coming up with ideas to improve Beach Green in early 2016.

Letters outlining their proposals were sent to Lancing Parish Council, which agreed to take up the suggestion to make the green’s facilities more easily accessible to people with disabilities.

Chairman Gloria Eveleigh said: “Lancing Parish Council would like to applaud the community spirit demonstrated by The Globe School’s project, and to particularly thank the pupils who prompted the council to prioritise this suggestion.

“Disabled people need the same access as everyone else.”

Clerk Helen Plant said the council had received complaints regarding the poor access to the public toilets from the car park.

Wear in the grass showed that people were regularly cutting across the green to reach the toilets, while visitors in wheelchairs or with pushchairs were forced to use the longer footpath route, she said.

A resident at the Annual Residents’ Meeting in May also drew attention to the issue.

The new path, which runs between the car park and the public toilets, links with the exisiting path network.

Mrs Plant said: “This project shows that the council listens to the community.”

A bench is also on order to complete the project.

The path has been funded with a grant which came from Tesco’s Bags of Help Initiative.

Grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – which are raised from the 5p bag levy – are awarded to ‘environmental and greenspace projects’.

Tesco shoppers were able to vote in store for the cause they wanted to support from October to November last year.

The council was awarded the middle amount of £10,000 for the path project.

It was also granted a further £8,000 from the scheme, which it will put towards upgrading the play area in Monks Recreation Ground.

A council has formed a working group to plan the grounds’ regeneration.
