For any first time visitor to Cliffe Bonfire Society, the sight of the Archbishop of Cliffe reading his annual address on a platform, flanked by burning crosses, while bangers are thrown at him by fellow bonfire society members, is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
His attendants bravely bat away the bangers as he makes his speech and then the chant from the crowd begins: ‘Burn him, burn him, burn him.’
You feel as if you’ve been sucked into a time warp and popped out in rural Lewes hundreds of years ago.
Of course this traditional part of Cliffe Bonfire Society’s famous fireworks display is brilliant every time you see it, whether it’s the first or 51st.
So click play and have a look at one of the more unique features of a proper Sussex Bonfire Night. It just wouldn’t be Bonfire without it.
