VIDEO: Trio start a ‘wacky’ rally for Littlehampton RNLI

CONCERNS are mounting for a trio of daring RNLI volunteers who will be setting off on a daunting 1,600-mile road race, today (Friday, August 31) – in a car they describe as an “old banger”.

Liam Clark, Rob Devo and Simon Tann – volunteers at Littlehampton’s RNLI lifeboat station – have all entered the wacky Ramshackle Rally, which will see them racing from Calais, France, through Switzerland and Italy before ending in Croatia.

The event will take four days to complete. The only catch is all the cars entered must be more than 16 years old, costing less than £200.

Simon, who works in Rustington as a graphic designer, said his major worry was not taking part in the race, but simply completing it.

“Between us we have the skills of a teacher, a firefighter and a graphic designer. Boats we are fine with, but cars, not so much. We could probably change a tyre if we needed to but that’s about it,” he said.

The rally’s route will see the crew, who are hoping to raise more than £10,000 from the event, travel through tricky mountainous terrain, as well as the infamous Stelvio Pass, in the Alps.

However, as Liam, 28, of St Catherine’s Road, Littlehampton, said, he was more concerned about some of the bizarre and yet-to-be-announced challenges they will face. He said that, in previous years, competitors had to complete sections of the course with live chickens in the car.

“It’s going to be pretty wacky, but the organisers are keeping everything fairly secret right now. But I had a look online and that’s the sort of thing they do,” he said. To sponsor the trio, and their 16-year-old Honda Accord, see www.justgiving.com/littlehamptonlifeboatrally
