In the Bognor Regis area there have been a number of fatalities in recent months, and often it’s the local firefighters who are first on the scene.

To promote Road Safety Week and try to reduce those ‘unnecessary deaths’, West Sussex Fire & Rescue officers were outside Bognor Tesco to show just how dangerous distractions can be whilst behind the wheel.

They set up a drink-drive simulator and asked shoppers to try on ‘drunk goggles’ and walk in between cones, while offering advice on who to stay safe when driving.

“For us it’s road safety week 52 weeks of the year,” watch manager Sean Embleton said on Friday, outside Tesco on Shripney Road.

“We’re here today to promote and raise awarenes about being distracted by driving, which could be using a mobile phone, texting while you’re driving, eating, drinking, using an MP3 player.

“We’ve come along with the simulator on the info bus, where people can come and have a go at driving with the beer goggles on, which simulates what it’s like to drive when you’ve been drinking or under the influence of drugs.

“For us, we all live and work in this town and we’ve had a few fatalities lately, so we just want to make sure people stay safe.”
