Village day faces uncertain future

Storrington Village Day - a family event and source of support for local groups - will not take place this year.

Last year’s village day was cancelled to make way for Storrington Summer Festival - a more commercial event organised by Hometown Festivals.

The festival organisers have said that the Storrington Summer Festival will not be returning in 2016.

Steve Jacob of Hometown Festivals told the County Times: “I am afraid to say, due to many reasons we are not going to be putting on a Storrington Festival this year.

“We really enjoyed the event last year and would love for it be part of the Storrington calendar but unfortunately this won’t be the case.”

However, Storrington Village Day chairman Norman Boyland said this news did not come nearly soon enough for a 2016 village day to be planned instead.

He said: “Village days are on the wane, and that includes Storrington.

“That doesn’t mean to say that there will never be another one, but nothing’s planned for this year.”

Mr Boyland added: “The old village day was very much a voluntary thing. It was done for charity, it was free entry.

“It turned very commercial last year with that festival.

“We’ll continue talking to the parish council about the sort of event that people might like to go on in 2017.”

He said they would be aiming to create something which would encourage the whole village to take part.

However, he did mention that Storrington And District Classic And Sportscar Enthusiasts (commonly known as SADCASE), who had been a major feature of past village days, are planning an event of their own for this year.

A SADCASE spokesman said that, with the support of Storrington and Sullington Parish Council, they have arranged to hold a Storrington Classic Vehicle Show on the village recreation ground on Sunday July 31.
