Village hands outfree poppy seedsto mark centenary

NORTHIAM Conservation Society has been handing out free packets of poppy seeds to local residents as part of the village’s commemoration of the start of World War I.

Conservation Society chairman Mervyn Hayes said: “We would like people in the village to plant in the garden, window boxes or just in a pot to remember all the men of Northiam who died in WW1.”

He added: “We gave out over 250 bags of Flanders Poppy seeds and have ordered more because of demand. Other villages have contacted me to find out where to get the seeds.

Planting the seeds forms part of a wider project which aims to create a world-wide poppy field in memory of the fallen.
