Village is ‘once again under attack’ from developers

Lindfield residents are being urged to oppose plans to build up to 200 homes to the south of Scamps Hill.

Lindfield Preservation Society is also expecting an application for planning permission to build 135 homes near the corner of Lewes Road and Gravelye Lane.

“Our village is once again under attack by speculative developers,” the society said in a letter to its members.

“Combined with the other large estates already under construction in this area, these schemes would replace virtually all the open countryside between Lewes Road, Gravelye Lane and Snowdrop Lane with urban sprawl. Speculative developers are now mounting a full assault on Lindfield. They must be stopped if the character of our village is to survive.”

The society is asking its members to object to the plan via the online planning register at www.midsussex.gov.uk (reference code DM/15/4457).

The letter says that the planning application goes against both the Mid Sussex District Plan and the Lindfield Neighbourhood Plan.

“It should be self-evident why this is so,” it says. Lindfield has already been compelled to accept three large estates that will increase its population by 20 per cent and put 600 more cars on our roads (figures based on West Sussex County Council census data). This level of development is grossly disproportionate to the scale of our village and the capacity of its infrastructure.”

The society is also encouraging residents to attend a public meeting at King Edward Hall in High Street, Lindfield, from 8pm on Wednesday January 6.
