Village surgery for Barnham mooted

A GPs surgery for Barnham was one of the issues raised by villagers when they recently met their MP.

Several dozen residents took part in the public meeting with Nick Herbert.

The need for a local place where they can see a doctor was one of the strongest concerns which was discussed.

Other issues highlighted by members of the public included the provision of appropriate sites for travellers, bus services through Barnham and speeding at the top of Barnham Lane.

The erosion of local democracy and immigration were raised as well.

Mr Herbert, the MP for Arundel and South Downs, also updated people on a range of important matters.

These included the proposed shake-up of hospital services which would see 5,000 patients currently treated at St Richard's Hospital being sent to Worthing or Portsmouth instead. He also criticised plans to centralise maternity services. These would see eight out of ten mothers who have their babies in St Richard's or the Princess Royal Hospital at Haywards Heath having to go outside the county.

Another matter discussed by Mr Herbert was the proposed eco-town at Ford.

The meeting took place at Barnham Parish Hall. Joining Mr Herbert on the panel were the three Arun district councillors for Barnham '“ Jean Goad, Melissa Briggs and Dougal Maconachie. The meeting was chaired by Barnham Parish Council chairman Cllr Mike Young.

Cllr Young said: "It was extremely successful as Mr Herbert did not approach the meeting as a party political animal but as the representative of his constituents in Parliament.

"His answers were given with a genuine sincerity and I can say that those of us who attended were impressed with our MP."
