Village vigil to commemorate the start of the Battle of the Somme

A vigil is to be held in Amberley on Friday to commemorate the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The vigil will be in St Michael’s Church, Amberley, from 4.30 am until 8am on Friday (July 1) to mark the start of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and in remembrance of those from Amberley and Houghton who were killed or died of wounds during the First World War.

There will be periods of silence and readings by eight members of the community of letters from the Front, diaries and poems.

There will be a period of silence from 7.30 am followed by a reading of the names of The Fallen.

Prayers will be led by the Rev Alison Pattenden.
