PARISH COUNCIL: SAGA cheered on at Arlington Parish Council Meeting. ‘Over 30 Arlington residents turned up to support SAGA (Speed Action Group Arlington) at the parish council meeting on September 17. SAGA is pressurising the PC to challenge the decision of East Sussex County Council’s Highways department not to implement any kind of speed reduction scheme at this time. They want to know the real reason for this and are not satisfied with the excuses they have been given. It was evident from the level of enthusiastic support that a speed limit is long overdue for the village. The SAGA report highlighted the fact that all the surrounding villages, namely Wilmington, Alfriston, Littlington, Alciston, Berwick, Selmeston, Chalvington and Upper Dicker enjoy a 30mph speed limit. Yet Arlington stands alone in the centre of these surrounding villages without a speed limit, and it is used as a rat run by commuters driving at speed from the A27 to the A22, especially at peak times in the morning and evening. Unfortunately, these drivers are legally entitled to drive at 60mph through the village’s lanes and many of them do so aggressively. SAGA believes this to be totally unacceptable for a rural village, especially one that has various tourist attractions such as Arlington Reservoir, Abbotts Wood and Arlington Tea Rooms; has a very high number of equestrian centres; a large number of hikers; and is part of the National Cycle Network Route 2.

The parish council now admits that there is a big problem with speeding traffic in Arlington and are to write to Highways requesting a graduated 20/30/40 speed limit along the rat run. Watch this space.’ (Lindy Gillam).
