CHRISTMAS MARKET: We had an immensely successful and enjoyable Christmas Fair last weekend with an impressive number of visitors through the doors. Whether we are gaining a reputation for having interesting and excellent-quality products for sale or whether people just spot the signs by the side of the road and decide to come in I don’t know. The stallholders were very happy and their beautiful arts and crafts were much admired. In the kitchen, Jill Burt sold hundreds of cups of tea, pieces of cake and mince pies. Sylvia Carr bravely spent the entire weekend washing up and Rosemarie Warton practised her excellent salesperson skills and showed visitors to the Café all the hand-made decorations, cakes and other crafts that were on offer. The stallholders went home happy and we made a substantial sum for St Laurence Church.

ADVENT CAROLS: On Sunday we are having our Advent Carol Service at 6pm. I always love the beginning of Advent, no amount of the cheesy music and tacky decorations that one comes across in shops can spoil the magic for me.

CALENDARS: The Parish Calendars, featuring photos from around Falmer and Stanmer, are now available at Park Farm Shop as well as The Swan. They are only £5 and come in a sturdy cardboard envelope so you can post them as a gift. I am well ahead of myself this year and have already bagged my Christmas tree and ordered my turkey from the farm shop too.

BIRDS: I wish I had had my camera with me the other day. I looked out of the window and saw birds hopping about on the grass tossing fallen leaves in the air. At first I thought they were thrushes, but thrushes don’t go around in groups. I fetched my binoculars and discovered they were redwings. They stayed for a little while and then moved on to pastures new. We have never had them in the garden before so I was quite delighted.

DECEMBER: Coming up in December: University of Brighton Carol Service on December 9 at 5pm at St Laurence Church.
