100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 5 May 1916. Training Women for Farm Work. An experimental scheme for the training of women in agriculture has been instituted by the Bedfordshire Education Committee. The idea is to fit women to perform the lighter operations in farm work, and it pointed out that no previous experience is necessary.

The pupil must undertake to remain on an approved farm for at least eight weeks, the first four of which will be considered a period of instruction, the pupil receiving a maintenance grant of 10s weekly from the committee. During the second four weeks she will be paid 15s weekly by the farmer, and at the end of the period she can make her own arrangements as to future employment.
