100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 1 December 1916. Rabbits for Beef: Economy at Uckfield Workhouse. The Master’s Report: The Master (Mr A Hope) reported that he had obtained from Smithfield four cases of rabbits at 5 ½ d per lb., and substituted them for beef at 1s 1d and 1s 3d per pound and that the result had been satisfactory. He asked for permission to do this when possible and also suggested that it would be advantageous to kill seven pigs instead of selling them as at present. The Guardians consented to the use of rabbits, and referred the matter of the pigs to the Garden Committee.
