100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 9 February 1917. Waldron Rector’s Escape. The Rev Prebendary WJ, Humble-Crofts, Rector of Waldron, had a narrow escape from drowning on Friday last. He with other friends were skating on the lake at Possingworth when he ventured on ice that proved to be unsafe. He had got a considerable distance on when the ice broke, and he fell through. It was impossible for his friends to reach him, but fortunately after vigorous efforts he was able to extricate himself from his perilous position. We are glad to know that no ill effects have succeeded his immersion.

JANUARY RAINFALL: Total rainfall in January was 72mm compared with the average of 101mm, much less than the 187mm recorded last year. The most I have recorded was 207mm in 2014, the minimum was just 23mm in 2000.
