CHURCH SERVICES: Church of St Andrew and St Mary the Virgin, Sunday, 10am Parish Communion, 5.30pm Evening Prayer.

BIG PANCAKE PARTY: Shrove Tuesday, February 28, 11am in Fletching Church. Pancakes and coffee, eat all you want. Donations split between Church Urban Fund and our local Family Support Group. To raise funds for families struggling to get food on the table. All welcome.

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER: The 2017 service will be held at St James the Less Church, Nutley at 2pm on Friday March 3. This year the service has been prepared by women of the Philippines and is entitled Am I Being Unfair to You? Refreshments will be served afterwards.

AGM: Fletching Bonfire Society AGM is tonight, Friday, at 7.30pm.

CHROMATICS CHOIR: The choir rehearse onMonday at 7.45pm.

FLETCHING SINGERS: The singers meet on Tuesday at 7.45pm.

MARTIAL ARTS: Kobudo Martial Arts meet on Thursday at 5pm.

100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 23 February 1917. ‘Why did you stay at the last Workhouse only four months?’ enquired the Chairman of the Uckfield Guardians of an applicant for the post of cook on Monday. ‘Because, sir, there seemed to be a sort of fatality about the place. Soon after I got there the Master broke his neck, and then the Assistant Master blew his brains out, and then other things happened, so I thought it best to go.’ ‘I suppose,’ said a member, ‘you were afraid it might be your turn next.’
