A man who stated he allowed himself to be summoned in order to call attention to the traffic congestion in Cliffe High-street, Lewes, was fined 10s. at Lewes Police Court on Tuesday. He was John Yule de la Cour Elliott, 35, of Mitchell’s, Piltdown, and he pleaded not guilty to a summons for causing obstruction with his car.

A police officer said that on February 15 there was a traffic congestion in Cliffe High-street, because of defendant’s car, and traffic had to mount the pavement to get by. When he spoke to defendant Elliott was indignant and said his car was not causing an obstruction. He refused to give his name and address and his driving licence. The officer said he begun to take particulars of the car, when defendant reversed into Morris-road. In doing so the nearside front wheel of the car ran over his foot. There was an obstruction for about 18 minutes. PC Heather stated there was a stream of cars along South-street and Malling-street, right up to Cliffe Bridge.

Elliot said ‘I allowed myself to be summoned because I realised that the police have an almost impossible job to conduct the traffic in the Cliffe High-street.’ He often came into Cliffe and parked his car so that others could pass. He did not see the car park signs, which were afterwards pointed out by the constable. There was a coal lorry in front of his car and he maintained that the lorry caused as much obstruction as his car. He thought all traffic should he treated alike He was collecting parcels at the time of the congestion.
