DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS: Wealden Decorative and Fine Arts Society met in November to hear Dr Geri Parlby talk about the art and artifice of Fleet Street in a lecture entitled Shock, Horror, Probe. She began her talk with Wynkyn de Worde who set up England’s first printing press at the end of the fifteenth century thus enabling news to be circulated, albeit on a small scale. In 1702 the first newspaper, The Daily Courant moved into Fleet Street. Other titles followed and Fleet Street became the centre of newspaper journalism in London. Dr Parlby guided the members through a catalogue of newspapers founded; through their mergers and in some cases their collapses. The British press has been, and still is, a lively and for the greater part discriminating source of information for the people. Even today, when on line journalism is challenging the printed press and many people access all their news via the internet, our newspapers still command a loyal readership. Our December lecture always has a Christmas theme and this year’s lecture by James Lindlow is entitled Glory to the New Born King. In it he discusses depictions of the Nativity in European Art. If you think you might enjoy a monthly lecture on an aspect of the fine arts why don’t you come along to one of our meetings? The charge for one meeting is £5 and in December this includes mulled wine and mince pies. We next meet at 2pm in the Community Centre in Sheepsetting Lane on December 8. We would love to see you there.
