FINE ARTS SOCIETY: Wealden Decorative and Fine Arts Society. The story of the birth of Christ appears only in the gospels of St Luke and St. Matthew and even there details are sparse. This allows a great deal of artistic licence when depicting the Nativity. From this starting point James Lindlow gave a scholarly and beautifully illustrated talk to the members entitled Glory to the New Born King – depictions of the Nativity in European Art. In it he demonstrated how artistic interpretation of the story built up through the centuries so creating the visual images we have today.
On January 12 members meet again to learn about the life and work of Marianne North, a Victorian botanical artist, in preparation for a visit to Kew in May where there will be an exhibition of her paintings. Non members and plant lovers are welcome to come along to the lecture. Contact 01435 873258 for details.
CROSS IN HAND WI: November’s meeting was our AGM, which was well attended and members enjoyed a light lunch before getting down to the business of electing the new committee for the forthcoming year. As a result of the ballot we have a full committee of eight members and our new President for 2015-2016 is Anita Jobling. With no time to spare the December meeting was held earlier than usual in the month and took the form of a Christmas party with entertainment provided by Peter Wilson. Peter talked to us about the history of Christmas Jazz and members were encouraged to sing along to many Christmas favourites, finishing with a rousing chorus of Sussex By The Sea. In true WI fashion there was a wealth of food and drink to share and everyone left feeling very Christmassy.
The flower of the month winner, Helen Whiteman was presented with a voucher and the Christmas hat competition was won by Joyce Watson.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday January 27 at 2pm, Cross-in-Hand village hall. Our speaker will be Mr B Freedland with a talk entitled A View from the Wings. For further information or membership enquiries please telephone: Anita Jobling 01435 863479 or Margaret Dove 01435 867076.
