SOUTH MALLING SCHOOL: The school has its Summer Fete tomorrow, Saturday, from 11.30am to 2.30pm. Please come and join them. They hope to see lots of friends and neighbours there. It’s going to be brilliant. They are hoping for glorious sunshine to make this the best fete yet.

On Friday last week our local MP, Maria Caulfield, visited our school. The Year 4 children have been working on the Send a Friend to School campaign in which they found out how many children around the world don’t have access to education. They used the 3rd world leader models they had constructed to tell Maria about what they would do if they were a world leader and then had a question session with her to find out what this government could do to help more children access education. She has now gone away with some actions and has promised to let the children know how she gets on. They were very excited to have also been invited to Westminster to have a first hand experience of Parliament.

Yesterday, Thursday, members of our School attended the launch of the long awaited but very welcome Lewes Cooperative Learning Partnership. After the lengthy legal process whereby Priory and Western Road became a Cooperative Trust and the simpler one when the Diocesan Board of Education gave their permission and blessing for five Church Schools to become partners, the Trust has been getting itself together, ready for a proper start next year. Part of this has involved children from the seven schools entering reading, writing and a Logo design competition, which were judged at the launch. We’ll let you know how South Malling Children did next week.

CHURCH NEWS: Trinity at South Malling, the Parish Church, is welcoming Shape Note singers from all over England this weekend. Sussex Harmony are holding their annual get together tomorrow, Saturday, (very appropriate for mostly American music), and welcome interested people to drop in, listen or even have a go. They will be singing from 10am to 4pm with breaks for prayers, refreshments and a bring and share lunch, which they are hoping they’ll be able to take outside. Their founder, Edwin, is coming down from Oxford, and will join singers from Derby to the Welsh Borders, including, of course, their own quire with new singers from Brighton. It’s an event on the national Sacred Harp calendar. On Sunday, the Church is welcoming Revd Judith Egar from St Anne’s to lead the Communion Service at 9.30am. They look forward to giving her a great South Malling welcome.
