ICY ROAD: With the frosty, icy Nevill roads, I seem to remember some time ago, a picture in the Sussex Express of a salt mountain and new gritter lorries. Pity they do not appear to be used on our estate but maybe it just hasn’t been bad enough yet.

WALLANDS SCHOOL: Last week was our penultimate football league match night, the Yr 6 boys played extremely well, winning all three matches, placing us at the top of the league. Everyone has two matches left to play and it couldn’t be more exciting, there are three or four schools who could win. The cup will be awarded on the final night. Eight children, who had previously qualified to compete, ran in the South Downs Area School Games Cross Country finals on Tuesday. This race was 2.5km on a cold but sunny day, Jack ran a great race to finish second and Gabriel finished fifth showing excellent sportsmanship by shaking Jack’s hand after finishing. The girls also ran well with Martha (fifth) and Ella (tenth). They have all qualified to represent the South Downs area on February 11 at Hickstead. Our other girls Zara, Megan and Freya finished seventeenth, nineteenth and twentieth, well done to all the children involved and to Flora who chose to support a child from another school who was struggling. A special mention to Flora, her parents and school for showing just how it’s not all about winning but helping our fellow man when things are not going well so well.

ST MARY’S SUPPORTERS CLUB: Bingo next Friday, February 3. Eyes down 8.30pm, all welcome. Table top sale at St Mary’s Supporters Club, Christie Road, on February 4, noon to 4pm. Everyone welcome.

CHRIST CHURCH: Last week (January 22), Christ Church held its first Sunday morning Messy Church. It went very well. We enjoyed a breakfast of cereals, bacon butties, and toast, followed by craft activities and worship on the theme of Jesus’ call to his disciples to be fishers of men. Our next Messy Church sessions are on Friday February 17 (half-term) on Sunday February 26. All are welcome .This week, we have Christ Church Tots session on Friday January 27 from 9.30am to 11.30am for pre-school children and their carers. Our Sunday worship at 10.30am will be led by Rev Peter Shilling. Last November, we marked the 200th anniversary of our predecessor church, The Tabernacle.

This Sunday marks the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Tabernacle Sunday School in 1817. We have a splendid blue and gold banner hanging in the church from the Sunday School, which was attended by generations of Lewes children.
